Why This Matters
A June 2026 CBS News investigation into AI's water footprint turned up a bigger story hiding in the data: residential lawn irrigation is the single largest everyday use of water in the U.S. — bigger than data centers, beef and meat production, or residential showers.

Our goal of one billion gallons saved is a small but real slice of that total — about 0.03% of annual U.S. residential lawn irrigation. One yard at a time, that adds up.
One billion gallons is equivalent to 1,515 Olympic Swimming Pools or filling the Denver Broncos stadium twice and flooding the parking lots.
Why We Chose This Seed Blend
Before committing a single yard to this experiment, the blend had to check every one of these boxes:
- Green year-round
- Mowing only every several months
- No fertilizer required
- A clover that doesn't flower
- Tough enough for pets and everyday foot traffic
- Easy to apply — broadcast seed, no plugs or sod
- Total project cost under $1,000
- Able to withstand drought restrictions of watering two days a week

Frequently Asked Questions
How much water will my pledge actually save?
Every square foot converted from Kentucky Bluegrass to MicroLawn saves about 10.6 gallons of irrigation water per year. A typical 1,750 sq ft backyard conversion saves roughly 18,500 gallons annually — even a parkway strip under 500 sq ft saves over 5,000 gallons a year.
Will my HOA allow a microclover lawn?
Many HOAs approve it once they understand it stays green year-round and meets landscaping standards. Our HOA Playbook has copy-and-paste talking points to help make the case.
What's actually in the seed blend?
A low-water microclover blend chosen for staying green year-round, needing mowing only every few months, requiring no fertilizer, and holding up to pets and foot traffic. See Key Seed Blends for the full breakdown.
How do I get started?
Our Getting Started guide walks through soil prep, seeding, and watering step by step, and the whole project typically costs under $1,000.

Why a goal of one billion gallons?
